Video Picnic I & II was an immersive video art screening that was designed in response to the closures of gallery spaces during 2021 and 2022.
Video Picnic brought together international and local video artists, animators and performance artists together for an immersive time based screening. Viewers sat in the grass and enjoyed a picnic basket of drinks and food while they bathed in the clouds floating around them and were guided through short films by a virtual host. The screenings reached 98% capacity without any spending on marketing, allowing all funds to go directly toward compensating the exhibiting artists.
Video Picnic I & II were designed to:
- ensure safety for each party
- reactivate the joy of experiencing art
-exhibit international and national artists in Austin during a time when residencies and artist opportunities were less available
-highlight the increase in video art due to virtual quarantine culture

Fortunately we’re back in the world of regular art openings and live performance. Will there be a Video Picnic III ? If so, it will be for the love of video art and picnics.
