GALLERY SPOTLIGHT:

THE PROJECTO

by Clarisa González

It's been a busy six months for The Projecto. The Austin-based arts organization opened its gallery doors to the public in November of last year, showcasing ceramicist Ron Geibel as its first-ever exhibiting artist. Founder and curator Coka Treviño sat down with concept animals to discuss the future of The Projecto.

The Projecto began in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2009 as a means for a young Treviño to help her artist friends sell their work. In doing this, she discovered she had a knack for making connections.

"I had friends who were talented or people who I could see were doing great," Treviño said. Whenever someone did something really good, and I really liked it, I would get excited and start telling people about it. I made sales almost by accident and got them shows just by talking about their work and how much I loved it."

After moving to Texas in 2010, Coka initially had trouble breaking into the Austin arts scene. Despite her experience working for the Museum of Contemporary Arts of Monterrey, she could not secure work as easily as she had previously.

"I would offer volunteer work, and sometimes they didn't even give me that," said Treviño. "I had already worked for the biggest museum in Monterrey, for the university, and for galleries. I worked with big-time people, and it didn't matter here."

During this time, Coka began to lean more heavily into cultivating The Projecto, molding it into what it is today: A cultural bridge between the United States and Latin America and an opportunity for artists to perfect their craft without added stress.

"I never thought about having a gallery, and I don't think about [The Projecto] as a gallery in the way that I don't think about it commercially. Artists need to experiment," Treviño said. "They need space and time, and it is really a joy to be able to provide that without the pressure of making something that people will like so that they give you money. Trust the artist first, and then they'll do well."

The Projecto has grown and evolved since its inception 15 years ago, but its original mission to elevate artists remains true. Treviño has worked hard to ensure that her organization directs its curatorial efforts toward empowering artistic communities through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Since opening, The Projecto has also displayed works by Mayra Silva (Monterrey, MX) and Patricia Carrington (Matamoros, MX). The Projecto currently features multimedia artist Alejandra Regalado (Mexico City, MX) and Visual Artist and musician Saakred (South Texas) until April 14, 2024.

The Projecto is located at 4201 S. Congress, Suite 323. Visits by appointment only.
