On the drive down to San Marcos I couldn’t help but build a mental picture of what I thought MotherShip Studios might look like.

The landscape surrounding MotherShip is so beautifully undeveloped (a sight for sore Austin eyes) that I smiled when Google Maps told me to suddenly “Turn right” off of San Marcos Highway.

I’m not going to tell you what my mental picture got right and wrong, but some fun surprises included the neighboring body shop replete with works-in-progress (wrecked and rehabbed cars) and children’s boxing studio that sandwich MotherShip’s bay, and the sweet brown and white horse quietly chomping on grass behind a shaded fence.

Beyond what I could readily see with my eyes, I was impressed to hear how much community outreach MotherShip cofounders Courtney Peterson and Jacqueline (Jackie) Overby had been doing in preparation for the first-ever San Marcos Studio Tour.

“Since November we’ve been reaching out to already established institutions and artists around us to find the people in the tiny pockets that might not have been at events we’ve been to,” said Jackie. “So, there has been a lot of groundwork done to make it known that we aren’t just coming in and not taking into account the artists that were already here doing things. A lot of our efforts have been including local businesses and artists to make them feel more included. All of the feedback we’ve gotten has been insanely supportive. I think that they’re hungry for it. There are art spaces here, but maybe not a unifying scene like with the Austin Studio Tours.”

It was inevitable that Texas State University would come up as we discussed the San Marcos art community.

Jackie remarked “With the university there is a high turnover of the population here and there aren’t a lot of people that stay and develop things. Something that sticks out in my mind is that years ago when I was still in college I was speaking with Rene Perez and he asked me what my plans were for after graduation. I was like ‘I want to go to grad school but I might stick around for a while,’ and he said ‘Yeah, everybody ends up leaving,’ and it was just this thing that stuck with me. I’m was like ‘No, that’s not fair, I want to stay and make something.’

And make something, she did.

“I moved my personal studio space into a nearby smaller warehouse with Sarah McFadden in 2019 after meeting her [motions to Courtney] at ThirdSpace Arts at Bolm,” continued Jackie.

Jackie and Courtney secured MotherShip Studios in March 2020 just before the lockdown began. “At first we were looking at the smaller bays and we were just talking about doing a small gallery, and then Jamie the owner was like ‘do you want this space instead?’ and we came and looked and were like ‘okay.’ We talked more and more about how we can build studios here, but we had to shelve that because of Covid.”

They’ve since built out three studio spaces (starting with resident artist Alicia Philley’s) and several gallery walls.

In January 2022 the first whispers of the San Marcos Studio Tours began with a text from Jackie to Courtney: “What if we did a SAN MARCOS Studio Tour?!”

Since that text, the momentum to make the San Marcos Studio Tour a reality gradually picked up steam.

“The team that’s been helping with the studio tour came together very organically. We just started talking about it and one-by-one all of these people started coming up like ‘Hey I’m interested in helping you’. Tiffany Leigh Coghill has been immensely helpful… and facilitated us getting fiscal sponsorship with MoHA (Museum of Human Achievement) to get tax-deductible donations to make this all happen.”

In addition to the many volunteers and donations made by local vendors, Courtney and Jackie have been putting their own blood, sweat, and tears into the project.

Courtney remarked “We both are comfortable building, so the stresses of building out the studios—we were in that together, but planning an event is a whole different ballgame. Everything was new and we are learning that we each do things a little differently and we butt heads, but we worked it out and it came together.”

As roommates, Blast Suppers (art community pot lucks) co-runners, studio co-owners, and now San Marcos tour co-founders, Jackie and Courtney have put stock into their friendship as they grow as artists and work to build the community around them.

“There seems to be a divide between artists at the university and artists in town,” said Jackie, “and I think we are trying to bridge that and build a community around both.”

A worthy cause for anyone to take up anywhere, but especially as artists for artists.
